There are eight character style tags in HTML

1. This shows the emphasis tag in action
2. This shows the Strong, bold tag in action
3. Here is the CODE example tag in action
4. This is an example of the SAMP like for URL samples tag in action
5. This tag, KBD shown here is for text to be typed by a user
6. This shows the VAR , for name of a variable tag in action
7. Almost done now, the DFN, which is used for definitions tag sample (note: IE only!)
8. Finally, the CITE tag, is used for citing references
